Looking at this refurbished. It's out of stock. She's been using $300 Best Buy specials for years now and they always end up crashing or the body falls apart before the first year is up.

I think this will be a nice upgrade. The specs are the same as my Mini (i5, 4gb ram, witch will either be upgraded soon or replaced with something nicer). Should do just fine for her.

My mom just got one similar for mother's day. She loves it.

If you prefer to get her a new one, MacMall has one for $100 more. Also consider eBay for finding used laptops... just gotta ask the seller a bunch of questions. I've scored laptops on eBay plenty. http://www.macmall.com/p/Apple-MacBoo…

I tell people never spend less than $800 on a new machine. You'll end up having to buy a new one after less than 2 years. My cousin is on his 3rd laptop in the past 4 years because his father bought him cheap $500 machines for college. He got a Mac now and it's been good to him. Same thing happened to his older sister as well.

You must like your mom way more than I like mine.

I talked my dad into getting it for her. My siblings and I are going to get her Office and a case. It's her birthday.

iirc memory on these new macs is soldered into the motherboard and is not user serviceable.

I also personally dislike OSX since 10.7, but that's just me. You cant realistically use 10.6 in 2014 and any hardware built for 10.6 is going to be slow.

My 2011 mini has removable ram. I got Mountie lion and stopped there. I don't know why they want their desktops to feel more like mobile OS.

Try to get 8 GB of ram, I got my mom a similar machine for Christmas but with 8 GB for future proofing, it's perhaps the best laptop ever outside of my MBP Retina.

Why do people get cases for aluminum computers? That makes absolutely no sense to me, if the case was made of glass (*cough* iphone *cough*) it would make sense, but aluminum? Did Apple make the case so thin that it can't stand up to normal use?

Please do not take any offense to this, in no way am I attacking your decisions, I have just wondered why people put plastic cases on aluminum computers. I hope your mother appreciates the machine, if her previous ones have been as bad as you described she's in for a real treat with a decent quality machine.

Yes, airs have soldered memory. The new retina ones might also, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, same. I had a late 08 MBP and I loaded up through Lion. Died that October.
